While the Parkour trend may have settled down some since the initial burst of interest after the Daniel Craig James Bond film, Casino Royale, Nekki’s game Vector makes me wish I was a free-running master.
Set in the not-so-distant future, your character is on the run from evil forces who would set him back to work in his…cubicle. The intro makes it seem a lot worse, trust me. The game is on rails, so there’s no worry about how you control the running. The only action the player has to perform is swiping up, down, left or right on the screen. Swiping up prompts the character to jump, swiping down makes him slide, swiping left and right has the character bounce from wall to wall. There are a few other moves, like sprinting for a large gap jump or vaulting over obstacles that are timed specifically in certain areas. Be careful though, not paying attention or missing the jump could result in the character stumbling, hitting his head or having to slow himself. Obviously, the baddies just keep coming so speed is extremely important. Throughout the levels there are bonus cubes that can be collected by vaulting certain obstacles or climbing up water-towers. Coins are randomly scattered as well. The coins can be used to purchase specific vaulting moves that add to your score. Some of the moves include vaulting an obstacle using only your hands, grabbing a bar and back-flipping over a gap and others that might make you toss your lunch. Right now, the free version of the game has only two levels, with a total of 21 stages in all. You can, however, upgrade your game and buy more. The game itself is actually pretty creative. It reminds me a lot of the PS3 game Mirror’s Edge. Oddly addicting and interestingly intuitive, Vector really lends to an easy gameplay experience. It’s just timing and swiping. How easy is that? Occasionally you’ll run into some frame rate issues and the game may or may not crash, which really hurts its score.
